With a degree in Music Education and years of experience directing middle and high school bands, I've helped dozens of students and returning players find their sound on the saxophone. While I now work full-time in technology, teaching saxophone on the side allows me to work closely and selectively with motivated middle and high school musicians and adults returning to the horn for fun. I know the thrill of a great sound—and how disheartening it is when your horn fights you every step of the way.

From the Band Hall to Private Studio

During my years as a school band director, I loved the energy of a full ensemble. But when you have fifty brass and woodwind players in a room, you have maybe ninety seconds to listen to each saxophone player.

That's why private instruction matters. In my studio, I take the time to dig deep: diagnosing subtle inner-mouth voicing, jaw relaxation, tongue arches, and breathing mechanics that school band directors simply don't have the time to troubleshoot.

The saxophone is a wondrous but temperamental acoustic machine. More often than not, when a student struggles with low notes, sluggish octave jumps, or a thin upper register, the culprit isn't lack of talent—it's a leaking pad, a sticky G# mechanism, an unseated neck cork, or the wrong reed strength.

Before telling a student to “just push more air,” I diagnose the mechanical reality first. Once your instrument is cooperating and your setup fits your anatomy, tone production becomes effortless and intuitive.
